Our Visit To Avalon Greyhound Sanctuary
By Tara | County Galway, Ireland
It’s not just a place of legend.
Avalon is a place we only thought we knew as the mythical island from the Arthurian legends. It was always a mysterious, yet idyllic land. However, Avalon does exist, nestled in the rolling green hills of County Galway, Ireland. It is indeed a refuge, but not quite the place you heard about in the old tales of Arthur. It’s a sanctuary for Greyhounds and horses. And although Avalon is no mythical island, it does capture the same essence of mysteriousness. It’s a well-kept secret.
We would never have known Avalon existed if it wasn’t for the village locals. It took quite some time to find this place, but once in Ireland, all you had to do was ask. From one local to the next we heard about this sanctuary that sat upon the beautiful hills just down the road. So one morning we decided to pay a visit. Our only directions: follow this road for 10 minutes until you see two pubs situated right next to each other, turn left and drive up the hill. When we eventually found the two pubs we were guided by a simple stone sign with a painting of a greyhound and an arrow. Once we reached the top of the hill we were met by beautiful vistas of seemingly untouched lands. We followed one more sign and drove down a long dirt road where we pulled up to a large green gate. Inside there was an old stone cottage. It was absolutely charming and had been renovated to accommodate our four-legged friends. We had found Avalon.
What they have created at Avalon is nothing short of amazing. 64 of their 95 dogs are Greyhounds. They have a social community outside in free-ranging enclosures and indoors they have dog rooms too. For our TG video shoot, we proudly invited 5 of the 64 Greyhounds of Avalon to join us.
